    The Staff and the Clefs

    The staff turns pitch into vertical position on the page. This lesson covers how to count lines and spaces, what a clef actually declares, and how middle C hinges the treble and bass staves together — with every example playable.

    Note Values and Rests

    about 13 min

    Note values do not encode seconds. They encode ratios between one another. This lesson works through the halving principle, the matching rests, what a dot really adds, and the tuplets that make division by three possible — hearing each ratio rather than just reading it.

    Meter and the Beat

    A time signature does more than count what fits in a measure — it decides where weight is felt. This lesson separates simple from compound meter, locates strong and weak beats, and reaches syncopation, playing one figure under different meters to hear the difference.

    Key Signatures and Accidentals

    A key signature is a declaration parked at the left of the staff saying which notes this piece alters. The order sharps and flats appear in comes from the interval of a fifth, and reading a tonic back out of a signature follows a fixed procedure. Accidentals and their scope round the lesson out.

    Enharmonics and How Notes Are Spelled

    about 13 min

    One key on the piano can carry several names, and that is not a quirk of notation. Because the letter in a note name fixes its scale degree, F# and Gb are theoretically distinct notes. This lesson reaches the point where E# and double accidentals become genuinely necessary.
