In this lesson
The last axis is rhythm. The lesson on melodic dictation recommended handling pitch and rhythm separately; this one extracts rhythm alone and transcribes it.
With no pitch involved it looks easier, and in practice more people struggle with rhythmic dictation. The reason is that you have to supply the reference yourself. Pitch comes with a given reference in the tonic; rhythm requires you to keep counting beats on your own.
Count beats while listening
The procedure centers on one thing.
Keep counting beats in your head as you listen.One, two, three, four; one, two, three, four. Lose that count and you lose your position. Physical aids — tapping a foot, counting on fingers — are perfectly acceptable. They are actively recommended.
What you judge while counting is only how each beat is subdivided.

Trying to distinguish seven note values at once is hard. Cut the music into single beats and look only at the subdivision inside each, and the options drop to about five.
Hearing the subdivision of a beat
Check: All four are at the same tempo, and the length of a beat never changes. The only variable is how many parts each beat is divided into — none, two, three, four. What you count is always the same one-two-three-four, and what you identify is how many notes fall inside it. That sense is the core of rhythmic dictation.

Telling division by two from division by three
The consequential fork is dividing by two against dividing by three — the same question as simple against compound meter in Unit 0.
Division in two goes “ta ta”; division in three goes “ta ta ta,” three landing evenly.
The confusing case is the dotted rhythm. A dotted eighth followed by a sixteenth goes “taaa-ta,” which resembles a triplet with only its first and third notes sounded.
The cue is where the short note falls. In a dotted rhythm the short note arrives three-quarters of the way through the beat; in a triplet-based figure it arrives two-thirds of the way. Until this is familiar, sounding triplets in your head while listening lets you compare the positions.

In 4/4, a dotted quarter note is followed by an eighth note. How many beats is that in total?
Check by summing the values
Rhythmic dictation offers a way to check your own work that the other kinds do not.
Sum the note values you transcribed, measure by measure. In 4/4 the total should be four; in 3/4, three; in 6/8, six eighth notes. If it does not add up, something is wrong.

If the total is short you have either omitted a rest or taken a value as too brief. If it is long, the reverse. The direction of the discrepancy identifies the kind of mistake, which focuses your attention when you listen again.

Check
You transcribe a measure of 4/4 and the note values sum to 3.5 beats. What should you suspect first?
Write so the beats stay visible
Hearing correctly is not enough; notating badly produces an unreadable score. There is one principle.
Write so that the start of each beat is visible on the page.A measure of 4/4 consists of the groupings 1-2 and 3-4. A note crossing that boundary — the middle of the measure — is split there and joined with a tie.
Fig. 2 is correct in duration, and a performer has to recount to find beat 3. Splitting it into two quarter notes joined by a tie keeps the same length while making the middle visible.
The job of a tie is to change readability without changing duration. Notating syncopation almost always requires it.
The procedure in summary

- Listen through while counting — without writing, following only the beats
- Draw the barlines first — build the frame before filling it
- Judge one beat at a time — looking only at how many parts it is divided into
- Check by summing — confirm each measure matches the meter
- Adjust so the beats are visible — splitting with ties where necessary
What this shares with melodic and harmonic dictation is the order: build the frame first and fill it afterward. In all three kinds, it is faster and more accurate than filling in sequentially from the start.

Theory is a tool for listening. It is the framework built here that lets you register what you hear as “that went from V to I” or “there was a suspension there.” In the sense that you can only hear structures you know, theory and ear training are two sides of the same thing.
